Department Chief and Medical Director, Surgery

Two surgeons working over a brightly lit operating room table.

Lakeridge Health, one of Ontario’s largest and most innovative regional health systems, is seeking an outstanding physician leader to serve as Department Chief & Medical Director, Surgery. This is a unique opportunity to lead a high-performing surgical program and department in an award-winning organization recognized for its excellence in clinical care, research, and academic leadership.

Serving a growing population of over 750,000 across five hospitals and multiple care sites — including the new state-of-the-art Jerry Coughlan Health and Wellness Centre (JCHWC) — Lakeridge Health delivers a full spectrum of surgical services. JCHWC features a leading ambulatory surgery program focused on same-day, high-efficiency procedures in orthopaedics, general surgery, ENT, and more. Across the system, Lakeridge Health is advancing robotic-assisted surgery with the Da Vinci Surgical System and is a designated regional centre for thoracic surgery and cancer care. The surgical program has been nationally recognized for quality and safety, including the American College of Surgeons NSQIP meritorious composite quality score, and the 2023 Lakeridge Health Quality and Person-Centred Care Partnership Award for co-design in orthopedic trauma, as well as earning Accreditation Canada’s highest designation and receiving awards for surgical innovation and patient-centered care.

As Chief & Medical Director, you will lead a talented team of surgeons across multiple specialties and sites, guiding strategy, operations, and quality improvement. You will champion surgical care that is integrated, evidence-informed, and aligned with population health needs — with a strong focus on equity, access, and culturally responsive care. You will continue to enhance a culture of collaboration, openness, mentorship and build a supportive environment where your teams can achieve high-performance through safe and quality driven patient care. You will also play a key role in shaping the academic and research agenda in partnership with Queen’s University and other academic partners, with opportunities to support clinical trials, surgical innovation, and health systems research. We are seeking a Royal College-certified surgeon (or equivalent) with demonstrated leadership, a commitment to academic excellence, and the vision to expand tertiary surgical care in a dynamic and growing region.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every requirement.

At Lakeridge Health, you’ll have the opportunity to lead transformative work, support the next generation of surgical leaders, and embed research, education, and innovation at the core of one of Ontario’s most ambitious health systems.
