A Blanket of Love and Dignity

At Lakeridge Health’s long-term care home, Lakeridge Gardens, a simple idea has grown into a touching symbol of connection and kindness.

Over the past several months, residents have come together in a knitting group, filling the home with conversation, laughter, and the gentle rhythm of needles at work. Each person crafted a unique square, reflecting their creativity and care. These squares were then carefully joined to create a single, meaningful blanket.

More than a source of comfort, this blanket will hold a sacred role at Lakeridge Gardens. It will be used to gently cover a resident as they are respectfully accompanied out of the home following their passing – a final gesture of love and honour from the community they shared.

“Every individual who contributed to what we call our dignity blanket has left a lasting legacy, ensuring that no one leaves Lakeridge Gardens without being surrounded by the collective love of the community,” said Brian Pollard, Health System Executive, Clinical.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the residents and volunteers whose time and talents brought this project to life,” added Lisa McVety, Administrator, Lakeridge Gardens. “It is a powerful reminder of the profound impact that even the simplest acts of kindness can have.”

At Lakeridge Gardens, the dignity blanket will forever serve as a symbol of respect, compassion, and shared humanity.
