Ajax Pickering Hospital Team Helps to Fulfill Patient’s “One Wish"
August 16 was a very special day for Devi Missir and Owen Bunbury, and their families.
On the rooftop patio at the Ajax Pickering Hospital, Devi and Owen were married in the presence of their children, siblings, a friend, and their guest of honour, Owen’s mother, who was a patient at the hospital.
While not exactly what they had originally planned, the couple decided to move their wedding date to ensure that Owen’s mother, Ella, would be able to attend as her health had been declining.
“It meant the world to us knowing that Owen’s mother was able to witness us get married,” said Devi. “It was her one wish and we wanted to ensure that it came true.”
In less than three days of planning, everything came together to make the wedding possible. With help from team members at the Ajax Pickering Hospital, Owen’s mother was brought outside to witness the nuptials.
Wearing a white dress and holding a beautiful bouquet of flowers, Devi was escorted down the ‘aisle’ by her son. After a brief but beautiful ceremony, the couple was pronounced husband and wife.
Sadly, Owen’s mother has since passed away. But Devi shared that the day “was simple and absolutely perfect.”
“Considering all that we have been through over the past three years, it was our honour to support this ceremony at the Ajax Pickering Hospital,” said Kim Driskell, Patient Care Manager of the Activation Team at Lakeridge Health. “It was a true example of the Lakeridge Health values in action and although Owen has unfortunately lost his mom, we will all fondly remember the positive impact of this day that the newlyweds can carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
“Seeing Owen’s mom smile was our favourite moment from the day,” added Devi. “We feel beyond blessed to have had her there and are very thankful to the entire team that helped make it possible.”
