Lakeridge Gardens Dialysis Unit Celebrates Thee Years of Life-Changing Care

Recently, the Lakeridge Gardens Dialysis Unit celebrated its third anniversary — a milestone marked with pride by staff, patients, and families who have been part of its journey since day one.

For patients like Donald Frost, the impact of access to a modernized dialysis treatment centre in West Durham is personal.

“It was a shock to learn that my kidneys failed,” said Donald. “Moving to Lakeridge Gardens has worked out for me—I really enjoy it. The staff treat me well, and now I don’t have to face traffic to get to my treatment."

Opened in 2022, the Lakeridge Gardens Dialysis Unit has quickly become a vital lifeline for people living with kidney disease in Ajax and across Durham Region. In just three years, the unit now operates at full capacity, six days a week, with the ability to provide hemodialysis treatment to 54 patients each week.

The opening of the Lakeridge Gardens Dialysis Unit has enabled the Regional Nephrology Program to expand its initiative to provide hemodialysis treatment closer to where patients live. Currently, 95% of patients receiving hemodialysis treatment at a Lakeridge Health site are being treated at the site closest to their home.

Midori, whose mother, Taeko, helped open the unit, added, “We’re within walking distance. I can push her wheelchair there myself. Lakeridge Gardens has given my mother a comfortable, truly caring experience for her dialysis. We’re so grateful to the staff and all the exceptional care that has made such a positive difference in her life.”
