Lakeridge Health Team Member Organizes Group Blood Donation Day
For Margaret Lafreniere, Environmental Services Associate in the Systemic Suite at the Durham Regional Cancer Centre (DRCC), donating blood is second nature. Every 58 days, Margaret donates blood to Canadian Blood Services, a heroic act that can help save up to three lives with each donation.
Recently, while waiting at the blood donation clinic, Margaret noticed a sign about group donations and was immediately inspired. “I thought this would be a great way to get more people involved,” said Margaret. “After all, I work somewhere where blood is always needed, so I figured I should try to organize a group donation.”
Margaret recruited four other Lakeridge Health team members from the Systemic Team at the DRCC to join her at her first group blood donation day. This small but mighty group collectively donated enough blood to help save up to 15 lives and treat a variety of medical conditions, including cancer, anemia, and traumatic injuries.
Canadian Blood Services Community Development Manager, Laura Jewell, assisted in the organization of the group donation day. “Every donation counts,” said Laura. “By donating blood, you are personally making a difference in the lives of those who need blood transfusions to survive. We are so appreciative of Margaret for her selfless decision to donate blood time and time again, and to the Lakeridge Health team members who joined her on this group donation day.”
Margaret plans to organize more group donation days and hopes to increase the number of team members who participate. “I want to challenge others to join us, and I hope that they are inspired to continue donating thereafter,” said Margaret.
Half of all Canadians will either need blood or know someone that will need blood at some point in their lives, yet only four per cent of Canadians donate. To learn more about blood donation and where you can donate, visit blood.ca.
