Lakeridge Health Volunteer Receives June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award!

Hip hip hooray! Congratulations to Marion Saunders, President of The Auxiliary of the Oshawa Hospital who is a recipient of the Ontario government’s 2024 June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism. Marion is one of just 14 volunteers and two organizations who received this prestigious honour this year.

As President of the Oshawa Auxiliary, Marion leads hundreds of volunteers committed to improving health care for our communities. Established in 1907, the auxiliary is a dynamic team of volunteers who support the hospital through various fundraising endeavors, notably the Gift Shop and Café nestled in the Oshawa Hospital's main floor.

"Receiving this honour is very humbling," shares Marion. "I've admired award winners throughout my years of volunteering, and to be named a recipient is truly exciting."

Marion is a familiar face at Lakeridge Health, where her passion for volunteering is fueled by the incredible individuals she meets.

“I’ve been involved with Lakeridge Health for 25 years and I’m still involved so that says something,” says Marion. “It’s the commitment and dedication of staff and volunteers that continuously inspires me. They share a common goal to make a difference for the communities we live in.”

The former teacher brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her role. She has held pivotal positions such as President of the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario, served as President of the Hospital Auxiliary Board in Bowmanville, and was chair of the Hospital Board of Trustees of Lakeridge Health.

Beyond health care, Marion supported armed forces and their families through the Canadian Forces Chapel Guild, served as National President for the Anglican Church Women of Canada, and was the first President for the Primates World Relief and Development Fund, where she was Chair supporting two Christian hospitals in India.

Marion’s dedication demonstrates the commitment of Lakeridge Health volunteers who play a vital role in advancing our vision of One System. Best Health.

“I love what I do,” shares Marion. “Every interaction – whether with team members or patients and their families – reveals a unique story. That’s what makes volunteering so special.”
