National Physicians Day – Gynecology Oncology Team

This year, as part of how we’re marking this important day, we’re profiling physicians from across Lakeridge Health to showcase the talented team we have at our organization. Primarily composed of women, this remarkable team of physicians provide specialized radiation, chemotherapy, and surgical treatment for cancers affecting the female reproductive system.

The team consists of surgeons, gynecologic pathologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and nurse navigators, providing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to patient care.

What factors contribute to the team's success? Dr. Julie Ann Francis, Division Head, Gynecology Oncology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, says, “It’s the way the clinical teams all work together; we’re a close-knit team. Every week, we gather and review every patient’s case to determine the best path forward together. It's the epitome of collaborative care in action.”

Since launching in 2018, the Gynecology Oncology Centre, which is one of only three such community centres in Ontario, has been a lifeline for thousands of women requiring gynecologic cancer care. Before, patients had to trek to Kingston or Toronto for complex cancer surgeries.

“The Centre has made a huge difference for patients because they don’t need to travel for their treatment," shares Dr. Francis. “Patients have access to the care they need closer to home.”

In the last year, the team brought cutting-edge technology to the forefront with the use of the da Vinci Surgical System.

“Introducing the surgical robot to our program has revolutionized surgeries, making them minimally invasive and ensuring patients can head home the next day,” explains Dr. Francis. “We're continuously thinking of ways to innovate to improve cancer care and support women’s health.”

Thank you for your to the Gynecology Oncology team for your dedication and expertise in supporting women through their journey with gynecologic cancer.
