Request for Proposals Marks Another Major Step in the Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment Journey
Lakeridge Health and Infrastructure Ontario Reach a Key Milestone in the Landmark and Historic Expansion of the Bowmanville Hospital
(Durham Region) – October 1, 2025 – Lakeridge Health and Infrastructure Ontario, in collaboration with the Government of Ontario, have released the Request for Proposals (RFP) to redevelop the Bowmanville Hospital. The RFP marks a major step forward in the project, ushering in a new era of health care for Durham Region with a brand-new Bowmanville Hospital, purpose-built for the future.
Following a Request for Qualifications process that began in August 2024, two short-listed teams have been invited to submit proposals to design and build the redeveloped Bowmanville Hospital, which will more than double the size of the current hospital. The short-listed teams include:
Bowmanville Health Partners (BHP)
-
Applicant Lead: Amico Design Build Inc.
-
Design Team: NORR Architects & Engineers Ltd. and Hariri Pontarini Architects
-
Construction Team: Amico Design Build Inc. and Tom Jones Corporation
PCL Partnerships
-
Applicant Lead: PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
-
Design Team: Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc. and Cannon Design Ltd.
-
Construction Team: PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
The proposals will be carefully evaluated by Infrastructure Ontario and Lakeridge Health to determine which submission best meets the project requirements. After a top-ranked team is selected, contract negotiations will be finalized, the final designs and drawings will be completed, and construction can commence.
On-site construction is expected to begin in late 2026. The final design and construction timeline will be established in partnership with the successful proponent. As with any large-scale project, key dates may shift as the procurement process continues.
Throughout this stage of procurement, Lakeridge Health will continue with pre-construction activities, including engagement with patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, partners, and the Clarington community to gather input on the specifications and design of the redeveloped hospital.
The Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment is an important part of advancing Lakeridge Health’s vision of One System. Best Health., supporting the delivery of integrated, high-quality care close to home. Once complete, the new Bowmanville Hospital will help increase the number of beds and introduce modern, patient-centered facilities.
