Team Members Unite to Nourish and Support the Community
The compassionate hearts of members of Women’s and Children’s program shone brightly as they gathered on July 7 at the non-profit organization, Durham Outlook, to lovingly prepare and serve a nourishing lunch to those facing food insecurity in Oshawa.
Dr. Greg Athaide, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Co-Medical Director of the Women’s and Children’s Program, who spearheaded the fundraiser, shared, "Our recent team-building event at an Oshawa Generals game doubled as a fundraiser for Durham Outlook. Our initial aim was to raise $400 to sponsor a single meal service – complete with soup, salad, bread, a beverage, a main entrée, and dessert – for around 200 individuals. To our delight, the overwhelming generosity exceeded our expectations, allowing us to sponsor three complete meal services! Inspired to make an even greater impact, we assembled a team to also personally prepare and serve the meals."
Heather Jones, Volunteer Coordinator at Durham Outlook, expressed her deep gratitude. "We are immensely thankful to the Lakeridge Health team for their extraordinary support. This wonderful partnership is creating a significant difference in the lives of the diverse populations we serve."
For Obstetrician/Gynaecologist Dr. Shereen Chirayilkalam, who was one of many who participated with family members, the experience was all about community contribution. "I firmly believe that through collaborations like this, Lakeridge Health can accomplish remarkable things alongside our community."
Dr. Athaide reflected on the day's success. "It was a heartwarming experience, and the joy doesn't end here – we have two more opportunities to extend our hands and hearts in service."
