SURGICAL ASSISTANTS – AJAX/PICKERING & OSHAWA HOSPITALS 

Join our growing team of full and part-time Surgical Assistants supporting high-volume surgical programs across Lakeridge Health. Due to increasing surgical demand and a regional shortage of Surgical Assistants, we are actively recruiting qualified candidates. 

Surgical Assistants support procedures across Orthopedic Surgery, General Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Non-Cardiac Thoracic Surgery, and Plastic Surgery. Opportunities are available for both regular daytime work and after-hours coverage at all sites but primarily Ajax-Pickering and Oshawa Hospitals 

We have a large and expanding surgical program with excellent ancillary support services. The Surgical Assistant provides intra-operative support including exposure, hemostasis, retraction, suturing, and wound closure to assist the surgeon in safely performing operative procedures. 

The Surgical Assistant performs duties under the direction and supervision of the Surgeon and in accordance with hospital policies and applicable laws and regulations. 

Eligibility 

Applicants must be qualified to perform the duties of a Surgical Assistant within the scope of their professional training and licensure and must be eligible for appointment and credentialing at Lakeridge Health. 

Eligible applicants include physicians holding independent licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and eligible for appointment to the Lakeridge Health Credentialed Staff and privileging through the Medical Advisory Committee in accordance with the Public Hospitals Act (Ontario) and hospital by-laws. 

All applicants must be eligible to practice within Ontario and meet the credentialing and professional standards required by Lakeridge Health. 

Qualifications and Experience 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of surgical assisting principles including tissue exposure, retraction, hemostasis, suturing, wound closure, and other intraoperative technical support functions. 

  • Experience working in a hospital operating room environment is preferred. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary surgical teams. 

  • Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and adherence to hospital policies, professional standards, and applicable legislation. 

  • Successful candidates must meet all Lakeridge Health credentialing requirements, including occupational health screening and professional practice standards.
