A Champion for Compassionate Care: Leanne Johnson Recognized for Impact in Organ and Tissue Donation

For Leanne Johnson, organ and tissue donation is never “just another case.” 

Behind every transplant procedure is a person – a life, a family, a story. And that’s something she carries with her into the operating room every single time. 

As a Resource Nurse in the Operating Room in Lakeridge Health’s Surgery Program, Leanne plays a critical role in ensuring each donation case runs smoothly. But what sets her apart isn’t just her clinical expertise, it’s the care and intention she brings to every moment. From supporting the team to honouring a donor’s final wishes, she helps create an environment grounded in dignity, compassion, and respect. 

Before each procedure, there is a pause. Sometimes music fills the room. Sometimes a story is read. Always, there is a moment of silence. 

“It reminds us that this is someone’s loved one, and that what we’re doing matters.,” Leanne says. “You don’t forget them. Every one of them forever holds a place in my heart.” 

Over more than two decades, Leanne has witnessed the incredible generosity of organ and tissue donors, and the profound trust families place in the care team. Even in the brief moments she’s encountered loved ones, that responsibility is never lost on her. 

“You just want to reassure them – we’re going to take care of their person,” she says. “We’re going to honour them.” 

That quiet commitment has not gone unnoticed. Leanne has been named a recipient of the Provincial Donation Champion Award by Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network) – an honour recognizing health-care professionals who go above and beyond as advocates for organ and tissue donation. 

For Leanne, the recognition is deeply meaningful, but not something she sees as hers alone. 

“I’m just one piece of the puzzle,” she says. “This work takes a whole team. Everyone plays an important role and if I could share this award with everyone, I would.” 

Still, it’s her compassion, her presence, and her unwavering respect for every donor that leave a lasting impact. In the most difficult moments, Leanne helps ensure that every final act of generosity is treated with dignity and heart.
