From First Step to Future Career: How Technical Assistants Are Transforming Diagnostic Imaging at Lakeridge Health
At Lakeridge Health, innovation in patient care isn’t just about technology – it’s about people and the roles that support them.
That’s exactly what inspired the introduction of the Technical Assistant role in Diagnostic Imaging (DI) in 2025. Designed to strengthen frontline care and improve the patient experience across multiple imaging modalities, the role has quickly grown into a vital part of the team – helping patients feel more comfortable every step of the way, supporting staff and enhancing workflows.
“The Technical Assistant role has been transformative for our department,” says Dr. Ghassan Awad Elkarim, Chief of Diagnostic Imaging and Medical Director, Diagnostic Services. “It strengthens our ability to deliver timely, high-quality care while creating meaningful opportunities for individuals to grow within diagnostic imaging. By supporting both our patients and our clinical teams, these roles are helping shape the future of healthcare at Lakeridge Health.”
Take a walk through the DI department and you’ll see Technical Assistants in action. They’re often the first friendly face greeting patients, guiding them through their appointments, and helping position them for exams. In the Computed Tomography (CT) department, they play a key role in improving patient flow and efficiency. In X-ray, they assist with patient transfers. In ultrasound, they support radiologists during procedures like biopsies.
Across every interaction, they are focused on making care more seamless and more human.
But what makes this role truly special is the opportunity it creates – not just for patients, but for the people who take it on.
“When I arrived in Canada, I was preparing for my Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) exam but didn’t yet have a clear understanding of how the healthcare system worked in practice,” says Noah Fakoya, Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) at Lakeridge Health. “The Technical Assistant role gave me that real-world perspective. It helped me connect what I was studying to actual clinical workflows, patient care, and imaging protocols. Learning alongside experienced technologists made a huge difference – not just for my exam preparation, but for my confidence.”
That hands-on experience is a common thread among many who begin their careers as Technical Assistants – offering a clearer path from learning to practice.
“For me, this role was truly a stepping stone into my career,” adds Sandeep Kaur, Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) at Lakeridge Health. “When I first came to Canada, I was looking for administrative roles to better understand how diagnostic imaging departments operate as I prepared for my CAMRT (professional certification for MRTs) exam. The Technical Assistant role turned out to be a great decision. Working closely with experienced MRTs and being involved in patient care gave me a strong understanding of workflows and built my confidence. By the time I passed my exam and transitioned into an MRT role, everything felt more familiar.”
Together, their experiences reflect a broader impact. Through a recent development program supporting individuals preparing for their licensing exams, several Technical Assistants have successfully transitioned into fully registered roles.
“Technical Assistants are a powerful example of how Lakeridge Health is investing in its people – supporting their growth while strengthening care for patients,” says Lorel Morrison, Clinical Director, Diagnostic Imaging. “We’re not only improving the patient experience – we’re also building a strong pipeline of skilled, confident professionals who are ready to take the next step in their careers. It’s a win for our teams, our patients, and our communities.”
Today, the Technical Assistant role is helping shape the future of diagnostic imaging at Lakeridge Health. It’s about creating pathways, welcoming diverse talent, and building a team that’s ready to meet the evolving needs of health care.
And that future is growing.
