New Text Messaging Service Helps Emergency Department Patients at Oshawa Hospital Stay Informed
Waiting in an Emergency Department (ED) can be stressful, especially when you’re unsure what comes next.
To help patients feel more informed and connected, Lakeridge Health has introduced a new text messaging service at Oshawa Hospital that provides updates throughout their ED visit.
Patients who opt in will receive automatic text message updates at key points during their care journey, helping reduce uncertainty and improve the overall patient experience.
-
Text messages may include updates about:
-
When triage is complete.
-
Hourly updates while waiting to see a health care provider.
-
When a provider has been assigned and is reviewing their chart.
-
When diagnostic tests, such as CT scans, X-rays or ultrasounds, are ordered.
How can patients sign up?
Patients can opt in to receive text messages when registering at an ED kiosk or by asking a member of the registration or nursing team for assistance. They can also choose to have a family member or support person receive updates on their behalf.
Participation is optional, and patients can choose whether to opt in during each visit.
This initiative brings Innovation and Technology for Better Care, a key direction in our 2026–2031 Strategic Plan, into everyday practice – using technology already in place to improve communication and create a more connected experience for patients and families.
