July 17, 2026 Land Acquisition Supports Hospital Capacity: Rice Family Partnership Advances Redevelopment
Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital marks another milestone by acquiring land for a new surface parking lot to be located on the north side of Queen Street. Conveniently located adjacent to the hospital, this lot provides essential parking capacity to support the region's growing health-care needs.
The new parking lot represents a major milestone by adding critical capacity required for the Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment.
This expansion is made possible through a deep-rooted community partnership with the Rice family. Since 1971, John and Janet Rice thought about a future where their family property would serve the long-term health needs of their beloved community. Their son, Andrew Rice, acting on their wishes later in life, has now brought that vision to life.
Building upon his family's legacy of philanthropy, Andrew Rice's personal leadership has been instrumental in this transition. He worked tirelessly to coordinate the responsible relocation of local businesses and residents, ensuring that the transition was handled with care and respect for the community's unique fabric. His hands-on approach exemplifies the power of local residents who are stepping up to champion their hospital's future.
Thanks to the generosity, personal effort, and long-term vision of the Rice family whose belief in the power of local health care has enabled this new, and mission-critical parking lot. This essential enabling project adds much needed parking capacity, supporting access to care for the growing Clarington community.
Cynthia Davis, President and CEO, Lakeridge Health"Building a hospital takes a community. We're deeply grateful to the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation, the Rice family, and everyone who believes in the future of local health care. Together, we're turning our vision of One System. Best Health. into reality and ensuring generations of families have access to exceptional care close to home."
Andrew Rice, Community Partner"My parents believed in taking care of their community. They had a vision for local health care growth and were prepared to support it, every step of the way. To prepare the site in six months, we transitioned four families to relocated homes, relocated two business, and removed all six buildings. Clearly, I could not have done this without a great deal of assistance along the way. I am proud to advance my parents' dream to help support and build the future Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital."
Maria Petri, CEO, Bowmanville Hospital Foundation"The Rice family's enduring support is a powerful example of how community generosity can shape the future of health care close to home. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we are proud to recognize the Rice family as an integral part of that history – and of the future we are working to create. Their vision and commitment will have a lasting impact on patients, families, staff, and our entire community as we move closer to bringing a redeveloped Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital to life."
June 23, 2026 Request for Proposals Closes for the Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment Project
Lakeridge Health and the Ontario government take another step forward in the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment journey. Shortlisted teams submitted their detailed proposals, signaling the close of the Request for Proposals (RFP) stage.
Through a fair, open and transparent process, pre-qualified shortlisted teams were invited to respond to the RFP in September 2025. The teams, Bowmanville Health Partners and PCL Partnerships, have now submitted their proposals, which detail how they would design, build, and finance the redeveloped Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital.
Over the following months, the proposals will be carefully evaluated by Infrastructure Ontario and Lakeridge Health. The outcome of this evaluation is a decision to award the contract to one of the shortlisted teams. This milestone is expected to take place in fall 2026, with construction anticipated to begin shortly afterward. A fairness monitor is overseeing the entire procurement process.
The Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment advances Lakeridge Health's vision of One System. Best Health. by supporting the delivery of integrated, high-quality care close to home. Once complete, the new Bowmanville Hospital will increase the number of beds and introduce modern, patient-centered facilities.
June 22, 2026 Relocation of a Century-Old Landmark: Lambert House Begins New Chapter
As part of the Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment, Lambert House, a century-old heritage building, has been carefully relocated through a remarkable move to its new home on the Prince Street side of the hospital property.
Originally opened in 1926 as a residence for nurses, Lambert House holds deep historical and community significance in Bowmanville. Placing Lambert House at the new hospital entrance means every patient and visitor will pass the building where Bowmanville's tradition of care began; a gateway between Lambert House's original story in nursing and Bowmanville's modern, state-of-the-art health-care facility.
Through careful heritage oversight, Lambert House has been carefully conserved throughout the relocation process. Following the completion of a comprehensive Heritage Assessment and all necessary approvals, the move was carried out with meticulous planning to preserve the building's architectural character and historical integrity.
The move represents a significant milestone and arrives in a year of celebration for the Bowmanville community, which marks both the 100th anniversary of Lambert House and the 50th anniversary of the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation.
October 1, 2025 Request for Proposals Marks Another Major Step in the Redevelopment Journey
Lakeridge Health and Infrastructure Ontario, in collaboration with the Government of Ontario, have released the Request for Proposals (RFP) to redevelop the Bowmanville Hospital. The RFP marks a major step forward in the project, ushering in a new era of health care for Durham Region with a brand-new Bowmanville Hospital, purpose-built for the future.
Following a Request for Qualifications process that began in August 2024, two short-listed teams have been invited to submit proposals to design and build the redeveloped Bowmanville Hospital, which will more than double the size of the current hospital. The proposals will be carefully evaluated by Infrastructure Ontario and Lakeridge Health to determine which submission best meets the project requirements.
After a top-ranked team is selected, contract negotiations will be finalized, the final designs and drawings will be completed, and construction can commence.
Throughout this stage of procurement, Lakeridge Health will continue with pre-construction activities, including engagement with patients, staff, volunteers, partners, and the Clarington community to gather input on the specifications and design of the redeveloped hospital.
The Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment is an important part of advancing Lakeridge Health's vision of One System. Best Health., supporting the delivery of integrated, high-quality care close to home. Once complete, the new Bowmanville Hospital will help increase the number of beds and introduce modern, patient-centred facilities.
September 3, 2024 Interim Helipad Opens in Bowmanville
Lakeridge Health is proud to announce the official opening of the interim helipad in Bowmanville, a key milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance health care for Durham Region.
For over 30 years, Bowmanville Hospital's helipad was used to transfer critically ill patients to other acute care facilities. After it was closed in 2018 due to safety concerns, Lakeridge Health worked closely with Ornge, and various municipal, regional, provincial and federal partners to secure a new location, funding, and obtain the necessary approvals for an interim helipad for Bowmanville.
The Municipality of Clarington generously provided Lakeridge Health with access to its property at 1150 Haines Street for the interim helipad located less than five minutes away from the Bowmanville Hospital. This site has undergone comprehensive feasibility assessments and after successfully passing various rigorous safety tests, Transport Canada officially certified the site.
The opening of the interim helipad marks another significant milestone in Lakeridge Health's mission to enhance patient care and ensure that the integrated, regional system of care meets the evolving needs of the people of Durham Region. This interim helipad will support emergency air transportation until the permanent rooftop helipad is completed, a key component of the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment plan.
The redeveloped hospital will usher in a new era of health care in the Durham Region, featuring expanded critical care services, state-of-the-art facilities like an Ambulatory Care Centre and a Haemodialysis Centre, and a doubling of the hospital's size.
The interim helipad is one of many recent achievements in this redevelopment journey. Last month, the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) was issued to identify project teams with the expertise and capacity to design, construct, and finance this transformative project.
Lakeridge Health is excited to share this significant achievement with the community at a future event. Please stay tuned for upcoming details.
August 6, 2024 Request for Qualifications Issued for the Redevelopment Project
Lakeridge Health and Infrastructure Ontario have achieved a key milestone in the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment by issuing the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the project.
The RFQ marks the initial step in selecting a team to deliver the project, which will nearly double the size of the current hospital and significantly enhance access to quality health-care across the Durham Region.
The RFQ will help identify project teams that have the necessary design expertise, along with the construction and financial capacity, to undertake a project of this size and complexity. Following the submission of qualifications, Lakeridge Health and Infrastructure Ontario will partner to review and shortlist qualified teams. These teams will be invited to respond to a request for proposals (RFP), which is expected to be released in early 2025.
Throughout this procurement process, Lakeridge Health will continue with its pre-construction activities including engagement with patients, staff, volunteers, partners, and the Durham Region community to gather input on the specifications for the redeveloped hospital.
Once complete, the redeveloped Bowmanville Hospital will usher in a new era of health-care delivery in the Durham Region. This historic project will expand critical care services and introduce modern, patient-centred facilities including private and bariatric rooms, new ambulatory care clinics, and a Haemodialysis Centre.
May 14, 2024 Lakeridge Health Partners with Stantec to Lead Planning, Design and Compliance
In an exciting milestone, Lakeridge Health is pleased to announce Stantec has been selected to lead the Planning, Design, and Compliance (PDC) aspects of Lakeridge Health's Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment.
Hospital design and construction is complex, and the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment project will be one of Lakeridge Health's largest redevelopment projects to date. As a key partner and collaborator, Stantec's PDC team will work hand-in-hand with Lakeridge Health to further develop the site master plan and prepare key documents, including project-specific design output specifications.
These documents will form the guidelines and performance requirements that the successful building team must meet when preparing its design. The PDC team will also monitor construction progress and provide coordination and oversight during the commissioning and completion of the project.
Once the planning, design and compliance aspects are completed, Lakeridge Health and Infrastructure Ontario will issue a request for qualifications for a build partner to design, build and finance the project.
