Dialysis
A life sustaining therapy that cleans your blood and removes excess fluid from your body when your kidneys are no longer healthy enough to do these important jobs. This type of therapy is available at home or at a hospital or clinic.
There are two main types of dialysis:
Home Peritoneal Dialysis
Peritoneal Dialysis is a type of dialysis in which blood is cleaned and filtered through the abdominal lining inside your body. This is done at home with training and support from our nursing staff.
Patients work with our team at their own pace and within a few days are usually able to begin treatment at home using Peritoneal Dialysis. All that is needed is a willingness to learn and a home that will safely support the treatment — we provide the rest!
Learn more by reading the Kidney Foundation Handbook on Dialysis for Peritoneal Dialysis.

Best Start Unit
The Best Stat Unit offers an environment where patients and their essential partners in care can learn about different modality options, such as transplant, home peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis.
The unit will work collaboratively with patients and essential care partners over a 4 to 6 week time period to support and empower them to make an informed decision about their care. This is done through providing education and training, ensuring confidence and competence in performing their dialysis modality choice in their home or at an in-centre location. This unit is located at the Lakeridge Health Whitby Hospital.
Home Hemodialysis
We offer education, training and support for people who choose to do dialysis in the comfort of their home instead of travelling to a hospital or clinic multiple times a week.
Training typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, and training is completed at our Whitby site to prepare patients to continue their treatment at home with the support of our staff.
All that is needed is a willingness to learn and a home that can safely support the treatment — we provide the rest! All of the equipment and most renovations needed for water and electrical systems for dialysis are funded by our program.
Home Dialysis Assistance Program
For those needing further support with their home dialysis, assistance is provided through the community alongside the patient's primary nurse. Speak to your health-care team about this treatment option.
