The Division of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Lakeridge Health aims to provide outstanding care to the patients of Durham Region and beyond. Our doctors have expertise in general otolaryngology which focuses on diseases and surgery of the ear nose and throat and head and neck. This also includes advanced training (fellowship) in Facial Plastic Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Otology and Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery, as well as Sleep Medicine. We provide 24/7 on call coverage across all our health sytem at Oshawa, Ajax Pickering, Bowmanville, Port Perry, and Whitby Hospitals.

Our medical and surgical expertise involves both adult and pediatric diseases of the ear nose and throat and head and neck. We treat acute and chronic ear conditions, tonsils, adenoids, allergies, sinus problems, hearing and balance disorders, upper airway problems, sleep apnea, voice and swallowing problems. This also includes problems related to the thyroid, parathyroid and salivary glands and other lumps and bumps in the head and neck area.

Our pediatric surgical care includes myringotomy and tubes (for children with recurrent ear infections or fluid behind the ear drums), tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, tongue tie release, excision of congenital neck lesions, biopsy of neck lymph nodes and other procedures.

Our adult surgical care includes tonsillectomy, septoplasty, sinus surgery, biopsy of head and neck lesions, excision of benign and malignant tumours of the thyroid, parathyroid and salivary glands, congenital neck lesions, biopsy of neck lymph nodes and facial lesions, diagnosis of head and neck cancers, including throat and voice box cancers, repair of perforated ear drums and other surgeries.

When treating patients with cancer, our doctors collaborate with Durham Regional Cancer Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Odette Cancer Centre and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network.

Some of our otolaryngologists are also faculty members at the Queen’s University and University of Toronto.

Before Your Surgery

Please follow instructions provided by your surgeon’s office at all times. Make sure you carefully read and follow the instructions outlined in the Surgical Passport. Contact your surgeon’s office about need for preop appointment before surgery.

Directions

At Lakeridge Health Oshawa, take the escalator to the 2nd floor from the main lobby, turn right and proceed to the Surgical Registration Desk
At Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering, proceed to the Admitting Department on the main floor.

What to Bring on Day of Surgery

You will need to bring with you:

Your Ontario Health Card
If applicable your private insurance and credit card information
Your credit card or debit card for telephone, TV fees and extra expenses incurred during your stay
If applicable, your CPAP machine
Other items suggested by your surgeon’s office

What To Expect on Day of Surgery

After you report to the registration desk, you'll be asked to wait in the waiting room until a support attendant arrives to take you to a change room. You'll be asked to change into a hospital gown that ties up in the back and a housecoat that goes over the gown and ties up like a jacket at the front. You'll be given booties to wear on your feet and a clear plastic bag for your belongings that can be locked up during your procedure.

You will then be directed to a surgical waiting area where you will wait to meet members of your surgical team. They will take you into the operating room while your family members will be directed to an appropriate waiting area. Your relatives can track your progress on the Family Tracking monitor in the waiting area as each patient is given an identifying number and a card showing the colours of each area you'll be travelling to on your surgical journey.
