Organ Donation
It takes just one organ donor to save up to eight lives yet, every three days, someone dies waiting for a life-saving transplant in Ontario. Becoming a donor at the end of your life is exceedingly rare — generally, only about 1-2% of deaths occur under circumstances that make donation possible, and you are six times more likely to need an organ transplant than to become a donor.
Lakeridge Health is a strong supporter of the Trillium Gift of Life Network and works with them to promote organ and tissue donation. There are more than 1,500 people waiting for a transplant in Ontario right now but less than 35% of Ontarians have registered their consent to donate. Not only does an organ donor have the power to save lives, one tissue donor can improve the lives of 75 people. Everyone one of us has the potential to be an organ and tissue donor, regardless of age. For more information, please visit the Trillium Gift of Life Network or call 1-800-263-2833.
Even though you may have signed a donor card, it does not necessarily mean your consent to donate has been registered with Service Ontario. You can register your consent or find out if you are registered at Be A Donor. Your information will be stored in a secure database and made available to your loved ones and healthcare team.
It is important to discuss your wishes and beliefs about donation with your family. By doing so, you relieve your family of the burden of deciding on your behalf during their time of grief.
