Durham Appraisal and Screening Initiative for Youth (DASIY)

What is DASIY?

The Appraisal and Screening Initiative is an evidence-based process developed to screen all youth involved in the criminal justice system for mental health and substance use issues. It is a voluntary mental health process.

What is the purpose of screening?

Provided by a Mental Health and Pinewood Centre staff member at Lakeridge Health, this process is used to identify issues such as depression, anxiety, suicide risk, substance use, anger and aggression, somatic complaints, and traumatic experiences. Based on the results, and in collaboration with the youth, appropriate community referrals will be facilitated.

Why Screen?

Studies show that approximately 60–70% of youth in Youth Court experience mental health and/or substance use issues. The goal of the screening process is to:

• Identify potential mental health and/or substance use issues that may have contributed to the youth's involvement in the criminal justice system;
• Flag cases that may be appropriate for diversion;
• Assist Defence and Duty Counsel in better understanding the youth's situation and advocating as required;
• Provide referrals to the most appropriate community supports and services; and
• Reduce recidivism rates.

Inclusionary Criteria

Youth aged 12–18 involved in the criminal justice system.

DASIY Process

Referrals can occur at any stage of the court process. The DASIY counsellor will be present at the courthouse every Tuesday on Youth Court day. Approach the counsellor at any time, either in person, or use the contact information below to schedule an appointment for the screening process.
